Victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time

THANDEKA Mhlongo was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

On Wednesday, Mhlongo (30) was shot through the heart in what appears to be a random shooting aimed at ANC supporters who had gathered in a tent metres away from the Lindelani voting station in KwaDukuza.

She was part of a group of about 50 people who scattered after a shot was fired. When the rest of the group returned to the tent they saw Mhlongo lying on the ground.

Eye witnesses have blamed the shooting on IFP supporters.

An eyewitness who was part of the ANC group said as they were singing and chanting, a group from the nearby IFP tent walked down the road, also chanting.

“We gave way for them to pass. They returned their tent without incident. Minutes later the group of about 100 again moved down the road but this time, as they passed us a gunshot rang out, and Thandeka was down.

“We are still battling to understand what could have led to the shooting because we had been in our tents all the time, showing support for our party. There was no confrontation or argument. An IFP member decided to shoot at us without provocation,” said the leader, who asked to remain anonymous. He said the IFP group continued chanting as if nothing had happened.

ANC provincial spokesperson Sihle Zikalala said over the years Lindelani has been known as a no-go area for ANC members during election campaigns. He said the ANC will be talking to police to ensure that the matter receives immediate attention so that those who are responsible are brought to book.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our comrade at this difficult time,” he added.
