'Victims and survivors must be remembered'

2010-03-20 00:00

HUNDREDS of victims and survivors of what some are calling the forgotten war of the midlands need to be acknowledged in the history of the liberation of this country, say politicians.

Meshack Hadebe, the MEC for Social Development, says wars such as the Seven-Day War should remind communities that “we as the country should never go down those routes ever again”.

“While what happened was a tragedy, the community should always remember and take comfort in knowing that what their loved ones fought and died for, our freedom, was achieved.”

The former IFP leader in the midlands and member of the provincial legislature, David Ntombela, said that all those who perished during that war ought to have a monument created in their honour.

Ntombela is generally held by victims and the TRC to have been the major instigator of the war.

He described the war as one of the lowest points in the history of the Vulindlela area and the midlands.

Ntombela said it is a mystery to him why leaders were honoured for their contribution and yet the many who lost their lives were ignored.

“The war ravaged the midlands and a lot of people died, and yet none of them have ever been given recognition or remembered for what happened.”

In Pietermaritzburg, he said, there should be a monument with all the names of all those who died. They should be remembered for what they went through and for what happened to them.

He said the ANC has to be applauded for honouring all the freedom fighters by naming buildings and streets after them. However, the party should remember all those who died in the midlands.
