Vigilant neighbour takes on dumping

2011-08-16 00:00

MADAMS and maids in upmarket suburbs who keep their own backyards clean while dumping their waste in open spaces, beware: a vigilant neighbour is watching you.

One such neighbour in the Newholmes area is fed up with the volumes of waste brazenly being dumped in the open land alongside Belmont Crescent.

He prefers not to be named, and wants to know how those concerned about the environment can report transgressors.

“At long last the municipality is doing its bit to clean up, and we need to play our part,” he said.

The civic-minded neighbour said he once caught a domestic worker dumping household waste. When he reprimanded her he was told that her “madam,” told her to do it.

“I cannot understand how people can keep their own properties pristinely clean, with the grass mowed, the verges clipped and flowers blossoming in their gardens while not caring about the cleanliness of the neighbourhood,” he said.

One or two concerned neighbours have burnt the dumped rubbish from time to time, to curb the growth of the high rat population in the northern suburbs.

However, they are tired of clearing up other people’s mess and want the culprits caught to teach them a lesson, said the concerned resident.

Msunduzi municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said illegal dumping can be reported to the waste management department at 033 392 5359.

Peace officers will go out and investigate, and when found the culprit will be fined.
