Violence: Mchunu intervenes

2010-10-08 00:00

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu has intervened to end the bloody faction fighting in eShowe and Mutubatuba on the north coast.

His spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said Mchunu had sent a high-powered team of top police officers, including Commissioner Lt-General Mamunye Ngobeni, on a mission to eShowe on Wednesday.

Three people had been killed in eShowe recently in what is believed to be linked to faction fighting, while five people were seriously injured when the car they were travelling in was sprayed with bullets on Monday morning.

The incident happened barely two months after more than five people were killed in Mtubatuba’s eSiyembeni and Machibini areas.

Mchunu said on Monday Mchunu will visit Mtubatuba to engage with the community.

He said the delegation had assured him from their engagement with stakeholders that there is hope that the conflicts will end.” He urged communities to use legal avenues to resolve their disputes.
