Visagie new acting head for SIU

2015-03-03 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — President Jacob Zuma has appointed advocate Gerhard Visagie as acting head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), the presidency said yesterday.

“Advocate Visagie is the executive manager of legal services in the SIU and has been with the institution since 1997, having previously served in the erstwhile Heath commission,” spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

Visagie’s appointment followed the resignation of SIU head Vas Soni. He resigned for personal reasons, as his wife Anitha was unwell. He was appointed by Zuma in September 2013.

The DA’s Glynnis Breytenbach said his departure would be a setback in the fight against corruption, and added that time would tell whether he was truly leaving for personal reasons.
