Visitors shocked at cemetery neglect

“IF we can’t respect the dead, how do we respect the living?” These were the words of a visitor to Mountain Rise cemetery who had to leave in frustration. He could not find his mother’s tombstone because of the overgrown grass.

The visitor, who did not want to be named, said he visited the cemetery in January on his mother’s birthday. The grass was already long then and he complained to the municipality. He expected something to be done and was shocked to find that more than a month later the grass had not been cut.

“This time was worse, I couldn’t even find the tombstone,” he said.

Steven Naick, head of the Msunduzi parks department assured The Witness on Wednesday that the contractors would be at the cemetery yesterday cutting the grass. He said there has been no dedicated staff to attend to the problem.

His department confirmed the services of the contractor this week and work would definitely begin, Naick added.

The Witness will visit the cemetery to check if this is indeed the case.
