Vodacom upgrade: ‘impact minimised’

VODACOM’S upgrade is “entirely systematic”, the company said in a statement yesterday in response to Tutti Rudman’s comments published in Friday’s Witness.

Rudman, SA National Consumer Union chairperson, was commenting following complaints from Vodacom customers that cellphone reception has been patchy at times recently.

“We are replacing all the equipment in our base stations one-by-one, precisely to minimise the impact to our service,” said Vodacom’s Albert Breed.

“When a specific base station is being upgraded, the surrounding base stations in the area should pick up the excess traffic so it’s important to note that most customers will not notice a difference at all.”

But, he said, each base station can only handle a finite amount of traffic. “This means that [customers] might temporarily experience dropped calls or slower Internet speeds, but we’d like to emphasise that we do not envisage a total loss of service at all.

“As this situation is temporary and should not result in complete unavailability of service, the legislative requirements laid out in the Consumer Protection Act do not require us to reimburse customers.”
