Voortrekker: New lights for rugby matches

2013-02-12 00:00

FOLLOWING the first year of pre-season warm-up matches between high schools, which proved very popular among the schools that participated in 2012, Voortrekker will again be staging the event for the second year.

There is one major change, and that is the venue.

Last year, the matches took place at the Pieter Booysen rugby field on the KZNU campus off Golf Road, but Voortrekker have rigged up their own lights so that the matches will take place on their main rugby field.

The official opening of the lights will take place on Friday at 6 pm.

The first match will take place starting at 5 pm between Linpark and Greytown followed by a short opening ceremony. This will be followed by a match between Westville and Maritzburg College at 6.30 pm. At 7.30 pm, Voortrekker will play Westville’s second team.

What made the event popular among coaches was that the results were not important, there was no points system, reserves were not limited, coaches could replace players as they required and they did not have to play each Friday.

Over the next three Friday evenings, the KFC Voortrekker Rugby Night Series will take place with three matches each evening. In addition to the six teams playing this week, Kearsney and Howick will play one match.

There is an entrance fee of R10 per person with plenty of refreshments on sale.
