Voortrekker Sevens: KZN dominate pool after three convincing wins

2013-09-10 00:00

THE first round of the Voortrekker Sevens took place on Friday evening, when 12 matches between the sides in the two pools were played.

It was mistakenly reported that a KZN Development team was taking part, when it was in fact the KwaZulu-Natal U18 Sevens team. As expected, they headed pool A after three convincing wins. Port Natal were second in pool A after winning two matches but losing against KZN. St Charles were third in the pool, with Voortrekker in fourth place as they did not win a game.

Pool B was more competitive and it was Hilton that came out on top after winning two matches, but losing against Westville. The latter were second as they won two games and drew with Maritzburg College, but failed to earn a bonus point. In a fairly complex scoring system, Hilton managed two bonus points after scoring four tries in two matches. Third in the pool was College, surprised to lose to Hilton in the first game, with Weston in fourth place.

This coming Friday sees the knockout matches with all eight teams playing in the cup quarter-finals. The winners of the four games will than play in the cup semi-final leading to the eventual cup winner.

The losers will then play in the bowl and shield semi-finals. The sides who lose in the cup semis will play one another in the plate final.

Pool A: KZN 45 Voortrekker 5; Port Natal 35 St Charles 10; KZN 31 Port Natal 5; St Charles 24 Voortrekker 12; KZN 57 St Charles 0; Port Natal 31 Voortrekker 7.

Pool B: Hilton 24 Maritzburg College 12; Westville 12 Weston 5; Hilton 22 Weston 12; Westville 14 M College 14; M College 40 Weston 5; Westville 14 Hilton 0.

Cup quarter-final matches this coming Friday: 4 pm Port Natal vs Weston, 4.20 pm KZN vs Hilton, 4.40 pm Voortrekker vs Westville, 5 pm St Charles vs Maritzburg College.
