Voortrekker festival keenly supported

THERE were enthusiastic supporters around both the hockey and netball pitches at the 22nd annual Voortrekker Festival of girls’ sport on Saturday.

In the hockey, there were 16 teams divided into four pools. The winners of each pool played in the semi-finals.

The first semi-final saw Empangeni beating Kuswag 3-1 and the second saw Wartburg beating Dundee 1-0.

In a tight final with lots of support, Wartburg won the trophy with a 1-0 victory.

Wartburg’s winning goal came off the stick of Micaela Newton from a brilliant short corner deflection. This is a particularly good result for the Wartburg girls.

The 16 teams in the netball tournament were also divided into four pools. The top two teams of each pool contested the quarter-finals. The winners of pool C, Kingsway, played against the runners-up from pool A, Voortrekker.

Kingsway won 12-6. Port Natal, winners of pool D, went through after beating Ladysmith, runners-up from pool B, 5-3.

Pool A winners Newcastle, beat pool C runners-up, Richards Bay 6-3 and the winners of pool B, Kuswag, beat runners-up from Pool D, Empangeni 11-3.

In the semi-finals, Kingsway beat Port Natal 15-7 and Kuswag beat Newcastle 6-4.

The final between Kingsway and Kuswag saw the girls from Kingsway triumph over their close neighbours 7-2 to take the trophy.
