Voortrekker host Sevens to end season

2013-09-03 00:00

VOORTREKKER will host the last local sevens rugby tournament for the season. It will take place over two successive Fridays, with afternoon and evening sessions, starting on September 6 with the pool matches. On September 13 the knock-out stages take place.

There are eight schools involved, which are divided into two pools. Pool A has hosts Voortrekker, KZN Development, St Charles and Port Natal. Pool B has Maritzburg College, Westville, Hilton and Weston, certainly the more challenging of the two.

Hilton have not participated in any of the sevens tournaments held so far, while College were the runners-up in the cup final to Glenwood at the Glenwood Sevens. Westville have the pedigree to do well, but they have failed to reach the cup stages in both tournaments they played in. It will be difficult for Weston and all they can hope for is a shield win.

St Charles surprised many people by being runners-up to Michaelhouse in the College Sevens and they will hope to reproduce this form to play in the cup section. Port Natal will be the main obstacle for St Charles to lead their pool. Voortrekker should beat the Development team, but are unlikely to beat either Porties or the Saints.

It should be an entertaining late afternoon/evening with the rugby starting at 4 pm and finishing by 8 pm. As always, Voortrekker will supply plenty to eat for the hungry and drink for the thirsty.

Fixtures: 4 pm Voortrekker vs KZN Dev; 4.20 pm St Charles vs Port Natal; 4.40 pm M College vs Hilton; 5 pm Weston vs Westville; 5.20 pm Port Natal vs KZN Dev; 5.40 pm Voortrekker vs St Charles; 6 pm Hilton vs Weston; 6.20 pm Westville vs M College; 6.40 pm KZN Dev vs St Charles; 7 pm Voortrekker vs Port Natal; 7.20 pm Weston vs M College; 7.40 pm Westville vs Hilton.
