Voortrekker night series at UKZN

2012-02-28 00:00

IT was another successful evening of rugby on the Peter Booysen rugby grounds at the University on Friday. This was the second round of the Voortrekker Night Series.

The first of the 40-minute matches was between Greytown, who had beaten Voortrekker in their first game, and Linpark. Greytown was probably a little disappointed that they had not been able to score more than the four tries that gave them a 26-0 win. Strong tackles by Linpark prevented the Greytown backs having too much freedom.

In the second game, Kearsney played against Maritzburg College. The defence of the latter helped them to a narrow 8-5 win against Westville in the first game. It almost gave them a win in this game and despite having 14 players, after a red card early in the second half for a spear tackle, they lost 5-12. At half-time the teams were level at 5-5 and in the dying seconds of the second half, a poor College line-out gifted the ball to Kearsney who scored under the poles to give them the seven-point winning margin.

The final match was between hosts Voortrekker and Westville. Voortrekker played much better than they did in the first match and held Westville to 15-7 at half-time. In the second half they tired and Westville scored three more tries to win 30-7.

The third and last round is tomorrow night. At 5 pm, Howick will play against Linpark. At 6 pm Westville will play Greytown and at 7 pm Maritzburg College play the hosts, Voortrekker.
