Voortrekker sport festival takes place this weekend

THE 21st annual Voortrekker Sport Festival gets under way on Saturday. In addition to rugby, there will be matches in girls’ hockey and netball.

Twenty schools will be represented on the day, with 50 rugby teams, 16 netball teams and 16 hockey teams in action on the Voortrekker sports fields. This will involve over 1 200 participants and staff.

The feast of sport is sure to attract a good crowd throughout the day, with the first hockey and rugby matches starting at 8 am. Netball matches start a little later at 8.20 am. The final rugby match on the main field will be between the hosts Voortrekker and the Maritzburg College second team, scheduled to end at 4.15 pm.

The hockey has been divided into four pools of four teams in each. In netball, there are two pools, with six team in each. The final between the winners of the two semi-final matches in netball takes place at 2.10 pm. In hockey, the winners of each pool will face one another in the semi-finals, with the final scheduled for 3 pm.

Rugby includes matches in all age groups — U14, U15, U16 and first teams. The schools involved come from all over KwaZulu-Natal. Hockey and netball have first teams from the 16 schools involved.

There will be a R10 entrance fee for adults and school pupils not in uniform. Pupils in school uniform and infants will be admitted free of charge.
