Voted off ‘Idols’, but Bongi has a new chance to charm

2010-09-17 00:00

IDOLS finalist Bongi Mthombeni (23), voted off the singing show this week, has been offered another chance to shine.

The managing director of the Johannesburg Theatre, Bernard Jay, immediately contacted him to audition for the role of the prince in Janice Honeyman’s Christmas pantomime — Cinderella — next year.

Jay said Mthombeni is a born entertainment star.

“I’ve been watching him for weeks and I’ve thought for a while he would make an ideal Prince Charming.”

The role has not yet been cast, and Mthombeni still has to audition for Honeyman.

He said yesterday he is “very, very excited” at the offer. “It was a big surprise.”

He admitted being voted off Idols was a shock. “But I decided to be positive, and suddenly everything changed.

“I realised again with Idols that nothing that is worth it just happens. I also realised from the beginning that Idols is all about getting new opportunities. I met so many people and I can’t wait to audition for Honeyman. It’s a wonderful opportunity.”
