Votes recount: sa sends six, including da, to observe

2008-04-18 00:00

Cape Town — Foreign Affairs Minister Aziz Pahad announced yesterday that six South Africans, including a DA representative, will be sent to Zimbabwe to join a SADC team to observe a recount of votes from 23 constituencies tomorrow.

DA chief whip Ian Davidson said yesterday the DA has provisionally accepted an invitation to participate.

Ballots from 23 constituencies in the country’s parliamentary and presidential elections will be recounted at the request of the ruling Zanu-PF and two constituencies at the request of the opposition MDC.

“SADC is sending a team to ensure that the opposition parties or their agents are allowed to be present when this process unfolds, and indeed, to ensure that this process, which the Zimbabwe Electoral Council called for, is within the legal framework and to the satisfaction of all the parties,” Pahad said.

Responding, Davidson said the DA will, before accepting, seek assurances on the following issues:

• Whether the results of the presidential election will be released;

• Whether an explanation for the recount will be forthcoming;

• Whether the MDC and opposition parties have agreed to a recount;

• Whether there will be full investigation into whether or not the ballot boxes have been tampered with;

• Whether an international observer force will be allowed to observe the recount process.
