Vroom’s killer gets life + 19

2008-04-23 00:00

It is a sad indictment on our society that life costs so little, a high court judge said here yesterday when she sentenced Nhlanhla Dlamini (22) to life plus 19 years’ imprisonment on four charges, including the murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances of Mark Vroom (51) of Drummond.

Vroom was shot dead when he and his brother, Digby, apprehended an intruder in their home on the night of December 10 last year.

Dlamini, who pleaded guilty, admitted that he fired a shot at Vroom from outside the house in order to get him to release his companion, Sisho Msibi, who entered the house via a grid in the security gate used by Vroom’s pets.

Sentencing Dlamini of Cliffdale, Judge Leona Theron said Vroom effectively lost his life for a cellphone and cash.

She said there were a number of aggravating features in the case, including the fact that Dlamini was not a first offender.

He had been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment previously for housebreaking and had not learned from that experience.
