Vulindlela project: ‘No secrets’

2011-07-27 00:00

THE Human Settlements Department said it has no problem with the Democratic Alliance submitting a dossier on the Vulindlela housing project to both the Public Protector and the Special Investigations Unit.

Sureshinee Govender, acting spokesperson for the MEC for Human Settlements, Maggie Govender, said the process conforms to national housing policies and processes set out in the housing code.

The DA’s George Mari last week sent a 400-page dossier to the investigative units alleging irregularity in the awarding of a R1,2 billion tender to one implementing agency to build 25 000 homes over a five-year period in Vulindlela.

Govender said that in accordance with the policy of the Enhanced People’s Housing process there was no tender but an agreement with the Vulindlela Housing Association.

She added that the risk that Mari raises in his submission to the investigative units will be monitored and mitigated through oversight and a tight control environment and systems created by the department.

Govender added, “There are no secrets.

“There have been full presentations made to the provincial executive council and the portfolio committee on human settlements, where Mari could have asked the questions he posed in the media.”
