Vulindlela to get a nature reserve

2010-09-01 00:00

A MASSIVE nature conservation project is being envisioned for the kwaQanda community.

The KwaQanda Nature Reserve, tol be located in KwaQanda in Vulindlela, will be the first if its kind in the area.

The Ingonyama Trust has already leased 200 hectares to project manager Mpho Gumede for the next 40 years and numerous government departments have been brought on board to help rehabilitate the area.

Gumede, a former field ranger, is apparently also in negotiation with private investors to raise an estimated R10 million to plough into the development of the area.

He said the nature reserve will combine nature conservation and tourism.

As part of the project the area, which nestles among communities, high hills and the Mondi plantations, will be rehabilitated with all the alien plants removed.

It will have a camp site and a rondavel residential site for people not comfortable in tent camps, a botanical garden, a traditional medicine garden and wild animals introduced to the nature reserve.

“Plans are afoot to develop the area into a good nature conservancy; even KZN Wildlife has already sent its people to inspect the area and assess what kind of animals can survive,” said Gumede.

“We plan to have the site running by the end of next year as we will begin with the rehabilitation early next year.”

Gumede said when complete, the reserve will target mainly school children and passing tourists as their customers.
