WP coach is confident in Coleman’s goal-kicking ability for Currie Cup clash

CAPE TOWN — Western Province will go into their Currie Cup clash against Griquas with a goal-kicking question hanging over the head of their flyhalf.

Kurt Coleman will start in the pivot position ahead of Gary van Aswegen, who injured his shoulder in their 15-14 win over Free State last week.

The other flyhalf in the squad, Demetri Catrakilis, is also sidelined and he and Van Aswegen will only be ready for their next match against the Golden Lions in Johannesburg.

Coleman has only kicked for posts in five matches this year and while he is capable of fulfilling the role, he is not tried and tested at the top level.

He kicked three out of four in a Vodacom Cup game against the Leopards earlier this year and missed the only kick he took last week against the Cheetahs. However, he has worked hard on his goal-kicking since recovering from an injury in recent weeks.

Western Province coach Allister Coetzee is confident in Coleman as player and he hopes he can translate that into a good goal-kicking performance in Kimberley on Saturday.

“Kurt has good core skills. He kicks well out of hand and defends well. He also has a good pass and we’re hoping it could help us in the conditions in Kimberley.

“His place kicking has improved a lot. He’s not as consistent as what we’d like, but there is a good improvement,” said Coetzee.

Former SA Schools and Western Province Under-21 flyhalf Tim Swiel was named on the bench to provide cover.

Tomorrow’s clash in Kimberley kicks off at 3 pm.
