Waiting to ride the Red Brick Road

2013-11-29 00:00

YESTERDAY was supposed to be D-Day for the opening of Msunduzi’s Red Brick road outside city hall, but nothing happened.

Veteran councillor Bill Lambert described how, after last week’s report that the road was to be opened on November 28, he expected to drive up to the entrance of city hall for the executive committee (Exco) meeting. He was disappointed and frustrated at finding that once more the contractors had reneged on the opening date. He said they were first told the road would be opened in July and since then the date kept on changing. “For how long are we going to be fobbed off with different dates?” he asked.

Lambert pointed out that last week Msunduzi’s spokesperson Brian Zuma had told the media the road would be opened yesterday.

He asked Zuma to find out from the contractors why this did not happen, and to let Exco know before the end of the meeting, when the road would be opened. There was no announcement at the end of Exco. A media enquiry was sent to Zuma after the meeting, but he did not get back to The Witness at the time of going to press.

Lambert said the situation was unacceptable and he was now getting calls on a daily basis from residents who had had enough of the road closure. He reminded councillors that businesses on Chief Albert Luthuli Street were struggling, as was reported in The Witness last Friday. Lambert said the situation had become intolerable
