Wake up call for KZN Inland

2008-10-09 00:00

FREE State have served notice that KZN Inland better be on their game when they meet in the SA Airways Provincial Challenge at the Oval from October 23 to 26.

They drew with Northerns in the three-day and won the one-day against the strong team from Pretoria by 67 runs last weekend, while Inland edged WP on points in their rain-ruined three-dayer and lost by 46 runs in the shorter format.

In the three-day in Bloemfontein, Divan van Wyk (62), Hancke von Rauenstein (116) and Griffin Niewoudt (55) helped the home team reach 279/9 declared. Northerns responded positively, notching 287 all out, with left-arm spinner Wiaan van Zyl claiming his best figures of 6/96. The Free Staters made 261/9 declared in the second innings, with Divan van Wyk missing a ton by just seven runs.

Northerns reached 71 for three as the match was declared a draw.

In the one dayer, the Free Staters beat Northerns by 67 runs with opener Divan van Wyk scoring a run a ball 114 (10x4, 1x6). The former SA U19 World Cup captain hammered the first century of the one-day campaign in a total of 258/3. Jonathan Beukes smashed 76. In reply, Northerns were bundled out for 191. Gino Vries (3/33), Wiaan van Zyl (2/44) and Roman Terblanche (2/31) were among the wickets.

Inland should be strengthened in their bowling attack for the Free State encounter by the inclusion of experienced former Dolphins frontline leather flinger Andrew Tweedie.

Free State, though, look to have a formidable side and Inland are going to have to work hard to get a good result from October 21-23.

Meanwhile, this weekend’s SAA Challenge Pool A matches between home side Boland and KwaZulu-Natal Coastal in Paarl were postponed to next month due to the waterlogged state of affairs in that part of the Cape.
