Walters, United’s only confirmed signing

AS Maritzburg United’s snail’s pace in the transfer market continued yesterday — only confirming the outright signing of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Shu-aib Walters — defending Premier Soccer League champions SuperSport United showed their intentions of another stronghold by signing two internationals.

Gavin Hunt’s side signed former Germany-based solid leftback Bradley Carnell and recalled striker Kermit Erasmus from Holland to their well-drilled side, indicating that they want to rule the domestic league and the continent.

At United, meanwhile, key areas like the defence and strike force are yet to be strengthened, with chief executive officer Afzal Khan promising to tie up a few deals in the coming weeks.

With the club set to adopt the German philosophy which puts emphasis on attack, it is important they have a reliable last line of defence.

“Walters, having been to the World Cup, not only does he bring honour and pride to Maritzburg United, but also stabilises our defence. We are delighted to have him outright after intensive six weeks of negotiations with Bloemfontein Celtic and beating the likes of AmaZulu, Ajax Cape Town and SuperSport United to his signature,” said Khan of the Cape Town goalie who signed a three-year deal yesterday afternoon.

The veteran administrator said they would make strategic signings to bolster the Team of Choice, adding that negotiations with local and foreign-based players were going fevershly.

At SuperSport, Hunt looks to be close to assembling a complete squad with the addition of the two, who will no doubt add invaluable international experience.

Erasmus, touted as a future Bafana Bafana star and one of the players who starred for the SA U20s at the Fifa U20 World Cup in Egypt last year, will be having a second spell at the Pretoria side.

This United academy product from Port Elizabeth enjoyed a reasonable success at SBV Excelsio, scoring 11 times in 30 matches from Feyenoord.

Hunt described Carnell’s signing as “excellent”.

“I’m delighted to have signed Bradley and with all of his experience in this game he is an excellent signing for us.He has signed a two-year deal with us. He is a good replacement for Tsietsi Mahoa, who we couldn’t keep, because Bloemfontein Celtic had made a good offer. We got Bradley on a free [transfer] which is good for us,” Hunt told Kick-off website.

After starring for Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs, Carnell left for Germany in 1998 where turned out for various clubs and has been capped more than 40 times at senior international level.

Hunt’s move to lure overseas-based players to United has proved a success.

Veteran striker Glen Salmon, formerly based in Holland and Greece, and goalkeeper Emille Baron (Norway) used their experience to help United clinch their third successive league crown last season.

But the PSL champions have all but given up the chase for former Bafana and Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune, who is said to be trying his best to find a club overseas instead.
