A MANHUNT is underway for two men, one of whom allegedly shot two police officers as their vehicle was being searched in the Matungwini area on Sunday afternoon.

Captain Teddy Pillay and Warrant Officer Sibongiseni Khumalo from the Sundumbili police station near KwaDukuza had just stopped a “suspicious-looking car” after they had conducted routine patrols in the area when they were shot at after confronting the passenger.

“Khumalo was shot on his right leg whilst Pillay was shot in his left arm before a bullet penetrated the side of his bulletproof jacket and entered his chest,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

He said both the driver and the passenger fled the scene in the vehicle after the shooting.

The officers were taken to hospital, with Pillay in a critical condition while Khumalo’s condition was described as stable.

“A case of attempted murder has been registered for further investigation,” said Mdunge.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni expressed her shock at the shooting.

“The community must stand up and assist police in apprehending the perpetrator so that he can be tried for his actions,” she said.
