A PRISON warder shot and wounded a young man after catching him trying to break into his vehicle in Slangspruits, outside Imbali, on Thursday night.

Mbongeni Nzimande (38) said that after shooting the suspect at about 11 pm, he immediately drove to Alexandra police station to report the matter.

However, when he returned with the police the suspect has disappeared from the scene.

The suspect, who is believed to be 19 years old, was then caught in a nearby house where he had run to ask for help to contact paramedics.

“As we were searching for him we found out that the owner of the house had already contacted the police to inform them that he had a wounded man in his house,” said Nzimande.

He said he was in bed when he heard the sound of someone breaking into his Nissan 1400 bakkie, which was parked outside his house.

“As I opened the door I saw him near my car and I fired a shot at close range. There were about five other men standing at a distance.

“The man ran, but fell a short distance away … I jumped into my car and drove to the police station.”

He said at the scene police found an iron bar, which the man had used to open the vehicle.

The suspect was later taken to Edendale Hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to his hip.

Nzimande said he is looks forward to guarding the suspect in prison as he hopes he will be convicted and sentenced.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the suspect is under police guard at hospital. She also said circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
