Wargames brought down to size

2011-03-24 00:00

THE annual KwaZulu-Natal school wargames championships will be held on April 16 and 17 at Alexandra High School.

Wargames are simulated conflict games that can be played either on boards or online. The games usually focus on strategy, similar to chess, with some games including small lead figurines used to represent troops placed on a large map.

The two-day tournament is open to any primary or high school pupils. There is to be a knockout competition of figure gaming on both days, featuring “Ancients and Medieval”, a war game based on the period between 3000 BC and 1500 AD.

The board games, the aim of which is to capture the opponent’s counters, will be played on Sunday, April 17. Included are traditional Mlabalaba, draughts or checkers, backgammon and the Japansese go. There will, however, be no computer games.

The tournament is organised by Mind Sports South Africa, a division of South African Confederation of Sport and Olympic Committee, and will take place from 8.30 am to 5 pm.

There is no entrance fee. All entrants must register before April 1.

To register, call Jonathan Newman at 084 494 4920.
