Warm clothes for crèches

2014-06-12 00:00

WITH winter settling in and the icy temperatures it brings, a local charity organisation is stepping up to try and assist those who cannot afford warm clothes.

Pietermaritzburg Community Chest fundraising manager Angie Narayanan said the cold weather had prompted their team to consider what they could do to help at least some of those who were shivering in the cold weather be a little warmer.

And so, a campaign that invites businesses and private individuals to lend a helping hand by adopting a crèche or Educare facility that the Chest supports evolved.

“It’s cold and breezy out there. We need to take a moment to think of the needy, underprivileged children from impoverished communities,” said Narayanan.

“Please buy a beanie, gloves and scarf set for a child in a crèche,” said Narayanan.

She said sets can be bought for R25 at Moosa’s Discount Warehouse, who have made up the sets at a special price for Community Chest.

Already the campaign is gaining momentum with Farouk Moosa from Willowton Group who has adopted the Masakhane Crèche and Development Centre in Thembalihle, buying 150 sets of beanies, gloves and scarves for children there.

Masakhane teacher Grace Ndlovu was thrilled with the donation from Moosa yesterday.

“We have 150 children in our crèche. Some are orphans, while others have single parents who are unemployed. This will make a difference in their lives,” said Ndlovu.

Anyone wanting more information about the campaign can contact Narayanan or Mala at 033 394 1031.
