Warriors get final say

COLIN Ingram and Jon-Jon Smuts made half-centuries as the Chevrolet Warriors beat the Sunfoil Dolphins by seven wickets off the final ball of their Ram Slam T20 Challenge match at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth yesterday.

Set 143 for victory, the Warriors recovered from the early loss of Craig Kieswetter to secure their first victory of the competition in four starts, but it dit not come without drama in the final throws of the game.

With eight needed off the final over bowled by Robbie Frylinck, Ingram eventually poked the seamer through the cover region to secure two runs off the final delivery of the game for the win.

Ingram finished on 64 not out off 54 balls while Smuts added 54 in a match-winning 97-run partnership for the second wicket.

Dwayne Bravo bowled superbly for the Warriors to return figures of two for 20.

Earlier, the Warriors bowlers will have been satisfied they were able to put the skids on a Dolphins innings which at times threatened to run away from them.

Seamer Rusty Theron and offspinner Simon Harmer took two wickets each while left-arm turner Jon-Jon Smuts produced four tight overs.

Cameron Delport top-scored for the visitors with a well-struck 34 after captain Morné van Wyk won the toss and opted to bat.

The in-form Delport once again looked in good touch from the outset, but he lost his opening partner Van Wyk — caught by opposing captain Colin Ingram off the bowling of Rusty Theron with the total on 16.

Seamer Aya Gqamane was then introduced into attack in the fifth over and struck Delport on the helmet with his first delivery. Delport clearly took exception and struck the second ball for six and then took a single before new batsman Cody Chetty smashed 14 off the next three with a six and two fours.

As a result, the Dolphins had rushed to 46 for one after five and the Warriors were desperate for another breakthrough. They did not have to wait too long. In fact two overs later Chetty was on his way after edging Gqamane to wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter. He made 19 in 10 balls.

There was more success for the Warriors when Delport was trapped in front by a Harmer arm-ball seven deliveries later having scored 34 in 21 with two fours and three sixes.

Harmer struck again in his following over when he fielded a brilliantly caught and bowled opportunity from Vaughn van Jaarsveld (4).

West Indian Bravo and Frylinck both added 21 runs to give the innings some impetus in the middle and death overs.
