Warriors thrashed by Knights

2014-09-29 00:00

AN 80-run partnership for the fourth-wicket between Jon-Jon Smuts and Colin Ingram was not good enough to save the Warriors from an ignominious defeat on the third day of their Sunfoil Series match against the Knights at Chevrolet Park, Bloemfontein, on Saturday.

The visitors, chasing 331 for victory after bowling out the Chevrolet Knights for 327, were dismissed for 202, handing the Knights a 128-run victory.

The only batsmen to put up any resistance were Smuts (62), Athenkosi Dyili (36) and to a lesser extent Ingram (27) and Ryan Bailey (21).

That man Corne Dry was the bedrock on which the victory was built.

The all-rounder added the wickets of Michael Price (7) and Colin Ackermann (17) to his tally to finish with a match analysis 24-3-78-7.

Smuts was stupidly run out by Rilee Rossouw with his score on 62 scored off 83 balls with 11 boundaries. Wayne Parnell was unable to take his place in the batting line-up due to injury.

Earlier, the Knights started the day on 286 for eight, with Rudi Second on 92 and Quinton Friend on 30, a lead of 289. Friend added 14 runs to his overnight score, before holing out to Andrew Birch off the bowling of Basheeru Walters, the quickie’s third victim of the innings.

Tumi Masekela was the next man in, keeping his end up as Second stroked his way to his ninth first-class century, with a well-struck four through the covers. But just as Second was looking to climb into Simon Harmer, he was deceived in flight and top-edged it to Colin Ingram for 113 to end his stay at the wicket. Masekela was the last man standing on four.

Harmer was the pick of the bowlers taking 4-89 and Walters weighed in with 3-87.

Scores in brief

Knights 140 (Dry 51, Friend 51, Walters 3/44) and 327 (Second 113, Rossouw 44, Friend 44, Harmer 4/89).

Warriors 137 (Walters 29, Dry 5/44) and 202 (Smuts 62, Coetsee 3/47).

Knights won by 128 runs.
