Wartburg Sports Festival

2012-03-10 00:00

THE school’s rugby season in the Midlands officially starts with the Wartburg Festival and a week later the Voortrekker Festival. There have been practice games together with the Voortrekker Night league where coaches have been able to try various combinations for the season ahead.

Wartburg will hold their Sports Festival today, which has boys playing rugby together with girl’s hockey and netball on the go at the same time. This caters for rugby amongst the second tier sides.

There are 14 netball teams where they each play four 20-minute matches. There are 16 hockey teams, again playing four games each, but over 30 minutes. The rugby games last 60 minutes including the half time break and there are 20 sides in 10 matches.

The first matches in the hockey and netball start at 8.35 am while the rugby kicks off at 9 am. Ten schools have brought teams in each of the three codes. Hosts Wartburg, Greytown, Howick and Ixopo from the Midlands, Kokstad from the south and Durban schools, New Forest, Werda, St Henry’s and Durban Academy, together with Scottburgh from the South Coast. Other schools represented in two codes are Estcourt, Kloof, Ladysmith, Carter, Kingsway and King Edward. Schools playing just one code are Wembley, Thomas More, Grosvenor, Pongola, Weston, Linpark, Alexandra and Maritzburg College III.

It promises to be a great day and together with the Wartburg hospitality, spectators will not go hungry.

Although the official fixtures only start next weekend, other rugby matches today that will draw a lot of interest is the match between home side Westville and Glenwood.

Kearsney hosts Northwood and DHS travel to play Pinetown. George Campbell has a long trek to Newcastle where they play Sarel Cilliers. Most of the other schools will be having rugby trials.
