Wartburg men killed after scuffle

THE Wartburg community is living in fear after two locals were shot dead by unknown gunmen while walking.

Sijingane Hadebe (33) and Sithunywa Goqo (31) from Langeni in Wartburg were gunned down on Wednesday night after an altercation with a group of unknown men. Hadebe sustained two gunshot wounds, one on the head and another on his left leg, and a stab wound to the chest. Goqo also sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

Eunice Thusi, a resident at Langeni, said she heard a noise outside and looked out through the window.

“I noticed a person rolling on the ground inside my yard, crying for help, and I went out. I realised that it was Sithunywa, a man I know from the area. He was bleeding and wanted us to help him get to the hospital,” said Thusi.

But Goqo died before he could be taken to the hospital, while Hadebe died on the scene. Thusi said this happened around 8.30 pm while she was watching television with her family.

“I was shocked by what had happened. We live in fear in this area now.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has any information to come forward.

“Preliminary investigations have established that earlier in the evening Hadebe and Goqo were walking together in the area when they were confronted by a group of unknown men. Its believed that a scuffle between the victims and men ensued, which resulted in the men producing a firearm and a knife and thereafter attacking both victims, fatally wounding them,” said Jeevan. The suspects fled the scene and the motive for the killing was unknown. Jeevan said anyone with information should contact the branch commander, Warrant Officer Nicholas Ndlela, on 033 459 7352 or 082 459 7352.
