'Warzone': taxi crash leaves three badly hurt

2011-05-27 00:00

THE Umgeni and Argyle roads intersection in Durban resembled a war zone yesterday morning after a taxi had overturned, throwing its passengers on to the road.

Fifteen commuters were injured — three of them seriously — when the taxi driver apparently lost control of the vehicle. The taxi smashed into a pole before rolling several times.

Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire department arrived to find the crumpled remains of the taxi lying on its roof on the sidewalk.

Petrol was pouring from the wreckage, forming a river of flammable liquid along the road and into a drain.

Netcare spokesperson Chris Botha said firemen stopped the leak and secured the area, while medics moved patients to safety before stabilising them.“

“After attending to the injured we found that three people had sustained serious injuries, while the rest escaped with minor injuries.”

All the patients were treated on scene and taken to Addington Hospital for further treatment.

There were no other reports of accidents.
