Watching out of this world

2014-10-07 00:00

LOS ANGELES — Until someone establishes a chance to watch movies on the moon, the Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF) could be the next best thing. Though the Icelandic capital boasts the amenities of a modern European city, the surrounding countryside — renown for its emerald green cliffs, jet black volcanic soil and massive ice shelves — suggests another planet.

It is no wonder so many Hollywood productions have recognised Iceland's otherworldly potential, including Game of Thrones, but also Christopher Nolan's Interstellar to the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII. Iceland is one of those places everyone should see before dying, and RIFF is as good an excuse as any to get there for those in any way associated with the film industry.
