Water: Wards unhappy with slow response

2011-09-14 00:00

A LACK of response by the municipality’s water department to requests from councillors for water and sanitation services in their areas caused unhappiness at an infrastructure development portfolio meeting yesterday.

Members of the portfolio committee said they have made numerous requests, some going back years, for action to provide essential services, and are fobbed off or get no response at all.

National Freedom Party councillor Thokozani Magwaza said that since 1995 people in his area have been complaining to the department that about 72 houses were left without water meters because they were flooded at the time, but nothing has been done.

ANC councillor Bonga Shozi said he has been pleading with the department to supply water for the growing community in the Vulindlela area, but every time he calls they tell him they are very busy.

The committee recommended that there should be a meeting between the councillors and officials to discuss this matter for a lasting solution.
