Water: four blue drops for KZN

2011-11-24 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL’S water is among the safest in the world, and Pietermaritzburg ranks among the best. This was announced when Blue Drop status was given to the municipalities of eThekwini, Ugu, Ilembe and Msunduzi yesterday.

Said Shami Harichunder, Umgeni Water’s corporate stakeholder manager, “Umgeni Water is the water service provider that supplies bulk potable water to the four municipalities.

“We are elated by the municipalities’ achievements and will continue to work closely with them in trying to match or even better our customers’ Blue Drop performance in the next assessment period, which is currently under way.”

He said this process measures the performance of water service authorities and their water services providers and subsequently rewards or penalises the municipality upon evidence of its excellence or failure according to minimum standards or requirements that have been defined. He added the certification is a vote of confidence in the technical expertise of the personnel who supplied this water. The municipalities’ receipt of Blue Drop certification for six drinking water systems was marked by a function at the Point Waterfront this week.

The awards were made to:

• eThekwini – Umgeni Water

• Msunduzi – Umgeni Water

• Ilembe – Umgeni Water – Siza Water (Dolphin Coast)

• Ilembe – Umgeni Water (Groutville)

• Ugu – Umgeni Water (Scottburgh to Pennington)

• Ugu – Umgeni Water (Mathulini).
