Water tanker collides with two cars before crashing into house

A HOME in Imbali suffered extensive damage yesterday morning when a water tanker veered off the road and crashed into it.

ER24 emergency media liaison Derek Banks said it is believed that the tanker, which provides water services to Imbali, could have crashed at the top of F.J. Sithole Road as a result of a mechanical problem. He said the driver of the water tanker lost control of the vehicle shortly after 7 am and collided with two cars, before careering down an embankment and smashing into the house. There was nobody inside the house at the time of the crash, said Banks.

“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene. The driver of the truck was treated for minor to moderate injuries and a passenger of a light motor vehicle that the truck crashed into was treated for serious injuries,” said Banks.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment after paramedics attended to them and stabilised them on the scene. The accident will be investigated by the relevant authorities.

Acting deputy municipal manager for infrastructure services Sthembiso Mbimbi said the water tanker was not council-owned property but belonged to a contractor.

“It is estimated to have been carrying approximately 3 000 kl of water. A separate water tanker was dispatched to the affected communities shortly after the accident,” Mbimbi said.

Mbimbi said in terms of the contract, the supplier was responsible for all risks, including public liability.
