Water warriors: Kharina pupils take honours in regional Competition

2013-04-23 00:00

THE Grade 11 team of Kharina Secondary School will fly to Johannesburg in October to take part in the national championships after beating six other schools in the fifth regional high school Water Competition, held in Durban at the weekend.

The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) in Pietermaritzburg hosted the regional water competition in association with the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and PK Valves cc.

Shanley Hay of DUT said the competition underlined the importance of potable water distribution systems and encouarged pupils to take up civil engineering after school.

The Kharina team, Mandy Kubheka (16), Nhlamulo Mashele (17) and Yanga Shoba (16), had to distribute three litres of water into buckets using a reticulation system with various pipes and fittings.

Mandy said it took them a month to prepare.

The three, who all dream of becoming civil engineers, said “nothing went right” on the day of the competition.

Mandy said the water was leaking out and the pipe and the circuit were failing them.

“We had to start from scratch.”

Despite the shaky start, the team was not fazed.

They were in it to win it and their team was the only one that had zero penalty points. They each won R200 book vouchers.
