'We cannot dice with death'

MOTORISTS who engage in illegal drag racing must be apprehended and face the consequences of their actions, the minister of Transport said yesterday.

“We cannot dice with death and play games on our roads,” said Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele, responding to the illegal drag racing accident that left four high school pupils dead and two critically injured at Protea Glen, Soweto.

The five pupils were reportedly still in their school uniform and on their way home when two Mini Coopers — one of which allegedly belongs to controversial gospel rapper Jub Jub — rammed into them.

“This is an unnecessary loss of innocent young lives and therefore those who are found guilty must face the full wrath of the law,” Ndebele said.

In a statement in reaction to the fatal accident, South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) founder Carol Smit yesterday urged citizens to “insist our magistrates and judges accept that this is a crime [drunk driving], and give very harsh sentences”.
