‘We need to get the users out’

2014-07-09 00:00

COMMUNITY members will be marching to Durban City Hall to demand immediate action against increasing vagrancy and drug abuse in the city centre.

The march on Saturday from 10 am is expected to be attended by various groups ranging from the Dalton hostel dwellers to residents in the plush homes of Musgrave and middle-class locations in Glenwood.

Umbilo Community Policing Forum chairperson Ben Madokwe said the march was called after an increase in theft, muggings and housebreakings believed to be linked to the whoonga drug problem at King Dinizulu Park.

In a draft version of the memorandum of understanding — seen by The Witness and expected to be handed to officials at city hall — the Umbilo CPF has demanded a “short-term” solution and a “controlled space for the park dwellers”.

“The shelter must not be in the suburbs or the CBD. We need to get the users out of the community,” said Madokwe.

He said while the community wanted the vagrancy issue acted upon, they don’t want the people to “scatter”.
