Wear tekkies and help your cause gain traction

2013-05-30 00:00

FORGET casual Friday, now it’s all about paying your “tekkie tax”. Tomorrow, people will be wearing their “tekkies” in support of a cause close to their hearts in the first Tekkie Tax Day.

Tekkie Tax is an annual fundraising event. What makes it special is that donors can choose which cause they wish to support. The causes cover animals, basic community welfare, children, disability and education.

Many organisations stand to benefit from the Tekkie Tax initiative and it has attracted the eye of local celebrities, including actors from 7de Laan and rapper Jack Parow, who endorse the idea and will be participating tomorrow.

One of the NGOs that will benefit from the initiative is the South African Women’s Federation (SAVF), whose focus is on the welfare of children. The manager of SAVF in Pietermaritzburg, Loretta Moolman, hopes many people will support the cause, saying: “We have been selling tickets to companies and at the Liberty Midlands Mall.”

A Tekkie Tax sticker costs R10 and for donors who want to promote their chosen cause more loudly, neon-green shoelaces with a tag and a sticker are available for R30. You can buy them at any participating organisation or online at www.tekkietax.co.za.
