‘We’d rather have a braai than a crash’ — MEC says stray cattle will be shot

2007-12-05 00:00

This was one of the startling revelations made by Transport and Community Safety MEC Bheki Cele during the launch of the holiday season road safety campaign at the Mooi River Toll Plaza yesterday.

Cele said his lawyers have studied the laws of the country and established that law enforcement officers are allowed to shoot strays.

He added that animals, especially cattle, straying on the roads have been found to be responsible for a number of road accidents.

“The law allows for those cattle to be killed. We will then take the meat and give it to people in the nearest village so they can have a feast.

“If you do not kill those cattle we end up burying people,” he told traffic officers.

“We would rather have a braai than have people being killed on the roads because of straying cattle,” Cele said, to roars of laughter from those at the launch.
