Weekend:Extremely cold and wet weather expected

2012-07-13 00:00

IT’S going to be a cold, wet and even snowy weekend.

The SA Weather office has issued warnings to motorists that heavy snow could close mountain passes, including Van Reenen’s Pass, this weekend.

Forecaster Mduduzi Mthembu said yesterday that the entire Berg is expected to be blanketed with snow by Sunday morning.

The snow was also likely to extend to towns like Underberg and Matatiele, where maximum temperatures above eight degrees are not expected with cold to very cold temperatures expected across the rest of KZN.

Showers are also expected throughout the province starting today with scattered and isolated showers, and a 60% probability of rain tomorrow.

These extreme weather conditions will be caused by a cut-off low pressure system and cold front moving across the country.

Snowfall was expected to start over the mountains in the south-western parts of the Western Cape during last night, spreading rapidly east.

According to Weather SA, snowfall will be widespread and is expected in areas where it has not snowed in a long time or has not snowed at all.

Motorists are advised to seek information on the state of the mountain passes in these areas before venturing there. Sunday is expected to be gloomy in the morning, but while temperatures will remain cold, conditions will clear later in the day.
