Well-known musician Syd Kitchen dies at the age of 60

2011-03-24 00:00

THE death of Syd Kitchen, one of South Africa’s favourite and long-serving musicians, on Tuesday night has brought a flood of messages for his family and on Facebook and Twitter.

Kitchen (60) died on Tuesday night after a brief fight with lung cancer.

His wife, Germaine, said he died peacefully at the Highway Hospice in Durban.

Local industry representatives paid tribute to Kitchen, who had a wide following in the midlands. Said Dee Bedingfield of the Maritzburg Musicians’ Club, “In its first year, which was 30 years ago, it was a huge thrill and honour to have Syd come up from Durban and be our guest artist.”

Kitchen is the only musician to have performed at every Splashy Fen over the past 22 years.

Kitchen was known for hits such as Wash Your Socks and Africa’s Not For Sissies.

* There will be a benefit/tribute concert for Syd at Forgotten Falls, Howick, on 15 May. Details to follow.
