THE Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regionals of the Spar KZN Regional Hockey Tournament take place this Saturday at Wembley College in Greytown.

Wartburg Kirchdorf will be back to defend their title in this hotly contested regional, which will, for the first time, be played on astroturf which has recently been laid at the school.

Other schools vying for a place at the grand finals in July are Wembley College, Hermannsburg High , Greytown High, Domino Servite, Estcourt High and Ladysmith High.

Eight out of 10 regionals have already taken place this year in this provincial tournament.

Schools that have secured their place in the finals are Ferrum High School who will be making their fourth appearance, having dominated their Inland Northern Natal Regional. Danville Girls’ High School (Durban North) and Kokstad College (Southern Natal) will both be back to make their second appearances.

Westville Girls’ High School, who defeated champions St Mary’s DSG in the Highway Regional, make their debut at the finals.

Overall defending champions Durban Girls’ College will also be making their fourth appearance at the July finals.

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High, who have also dominated the Pietermaritzburg Central regionals, will be making their fourth appearance and St Anne’s College make their third appearance as winners of the Pietermaritzburg North Regionals.

Next Saturday, Grantleigh College will host the last of the regionals where the winners for the North Coast region will be decided.

Spar KZN’s MD, Rob Philipson said, “We are delighted with how this tournament has taken off. Now in its fourth year, this tournament is firmly entrenched in the school sports calendar.”

The finals will take place at Thomas More College and St Mary’s DSG over the weekend of July 26 and 27.
