Wentzel eager for stint with Sharks

CAPE TOWN — Springbok lock Marco Wentzel is relishing the prospect of ending his career with the Sharks.

Wentzel (34) recently joined the Sharks ahead of the Currie Cup season after returning to South Africa from English club London Wasps.

He played two Tests for South Africa back in 2002 and played 51 times over two seasons for Wasps and also had spells with Leicester and Leeds.

He was also put on standby by Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer for South Africa’s end-of-year tour last season following injuries to Andries Bekker and Ulster captain Johann Muller.

He told the Sharks website he is excited about the challenge ahead at the Sharks as they enter a new era with new management and coaching staff.

“Since starting here, I’ve seen a really talented group of young players. The Sharks have such a proud tradition that it’s an honour for me to come here.

“The talent here is really exciting, going forward, I think it’s going to be good,” he added.

Wentzel also said he is happy to be playing at his favourite rugby ground in the world.

“I’ve always personally felt that King’s Park is, by far, the best stadium to play in, in the world. Millennium Stadium is amazing but this is by far the best, the crowd is really on top of you and that creates a real buzz.”
