Werner: arrest made in soccer star murder case

2011-03-01 00:00

A 20-YEAR-OLD man was arrested yesterday morning in connection with the murder of a well-known soccer player who was stabbed several times in Pietermaritzburg.

The accused’s identity will only be disclosed once he appears at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court. He has been charged with the murder of Anthesal “Kosie” Werner (21), a star player for the Celtics United FC, in a tavern in Ghost Town on Saturday.

Locals have since linked the murder to infighting between residents over who should be elected as the councillor during the upcoming local government elections.

However, the murder followed an argument, which started when Werner saw the accused wearing his jacket. He apparently demanded his jacket back, but he was fatally stabbed as he was putting it on.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said members of the Mountain Rise police station project team arrested the suspect at about 10am at a house in Claridge. — WR.
