Westville Boys’ dominate swim season

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School dominated the schools’ swimming season, rounding off matters with their seventh consecutive D&D A League gala win at King’s Park Pool last week.

The school’s swimmers have not lost a gala anywhere in South Africa since 2007, knocking up a staggering 56 galas without defeat.

At local level they are unstoppable and have made the Alan Burt Inter-Provincial, the WBHS Inter-Provincial and the KZN Top 8 events their own.

Going into last Thursday’s gala, Westville’s swimmers knew they would have to pull out all the stops to remain top of the pile as local schools have upped their game in trying to topple the champions.

Glenwood and Clifton College have become serious threats, with other schools also managing to sneak in a win or two in the different age groups.

Kearsney and Glenwood got out of the blocks well, winning the U15 and U14 freestyle events, but Westville bounced back to win the other three freestyle races.

The breastroke events allowed the opposition to gain some ground as this was not Westville’s strongest discipline. They won the U14 event and waited to launch their attack in the backstroke races.

A win in the U14 race was followed by disqualification in the U15 event, the incident seeming to kickstart the Westville swimmers who hit the water with a purpose, never losing another race as they knocked off 14 consecutive wins — the three backstroke events, all butterfly races, the five medley events and the five-age freestyle ladder.

In total, Westville won 20 of the 26 races.

While the final scoreboard may have shown what seemed a comfortable win for Westville, they had to work hard for their win and to keep their winning streak intact.

Westville also had their B team at the event, the swimmers not shying away from the occasion and often finishing in the top three in various races. Overall, they finished fifth in the standings.

Next year’s KZN boys’ high school’s swimming season looks to be one to savour as schools go all out to topple Westville and add their names to the trophies on offer.

Glenwood A - 178
