Westville hockey sides score many goals

WITH a midweek 8-1 win against Thomas More under their belt, Westville Boys’ High School’s first hockey team were full of confidence going into Saturday’s clash against DHS on the Westville astro.

Despite dominating possession in the first half, Westville failed to get the ball into the back of the net and it was substitute Mbuso Mgobozi who finally succeeded, beating the DHS keeper with a reverse stick push to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage at half time.

Starting strongly once again, Westville doubled their lead early in the second period and added a third from a short corner.

Although DHS pulled one back, Westville surged ahead, netting a further three times for a 6-1 win.

The star for Westville was man of the match Alastair Tyrell who bagged a hat-trick coming off the bench.

It was a good day’s work on the hockey field for Westville whose seconds won 5-0, U16A 6-0 and U14A 6-1.

Glenwood’s first hockey team played their annual friendly against the Madsen XI last Thursday, measuring their skills against a team of past provincial and South African players.

Glenwood enjoyed the majority of possession and field play, but the wiry campaigners kept them at bay, defending well and making their forages into the scoring area count.

Unbeaten for many a long while, the Madsen’s XI kept their record intact with a 2-0 win. Glenwood thanked the senior players for the opportunity of squaring up against them.
