Westville thrash College in water polo game

2014-09-23 00:00

SOME schools started their summer sports programme last week, taking to the pool for the first round of water polo clashes.

Maritzburg College vs Westville

Known for their strong aquatics, Westville took no prisoners in a strong 7-1 win, playing at Maritzburg College.

There were two contrasting styles on offer, Westville opting for the mobile drop and quick swimming game, while the hosts went for the tight, hard press, more physical approach.

Westville started the stronger team and maintained their level throughout. They failed to convert numerous opportunities but counted this with a strong defensive display that led to mistakes from College when they attacked.

The visitors kept the score rolling along and, in hindsight, could have added more goals to their final tally. Goals came from Brandon Watkins (3), Ryan Landsberg, Ryan Clark, Richard Ogg and Aden Parker.

Credit goes to College for making a game of it. Their efforts were rewarded with a late consolation goal.

Both these teams are in action at the Clifton College water polo tournament this weekend in Durban.

Glenwood vs Michaelhouse

This was a tough clash, with both sides strong in defence. Glenwood battled to convert whatever opportunities came their way, missing five chances in the first few minutes, while Michaelhouse had a single shot on goal.

The misses saw impatience creep into Glenwood’s game, which ultimately cost them, with Michaelhouse as the 8-4 winners.
