Westville through to semis

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School are through to the semi-final of the KZN Coastal T20 tournament after beating Northwood by six wickets last week in a Group C match.

Having been the overall KZN champions for the past three years and representing the Dolphins at the national final, Westville were determined to continue the trend and make progress.

Playing at Westville on the hallowed Bowden’s field, Northwood called correctly and opted for first strike on what looked a flat track with a quick outfield.

However, the batsmen battled to score at a steady rate, posting 35-1 after eight overs. This put pressure on the rest of the lads coming to the crease but Blade Capell (35 from 39 balls) and Junaid Syed (32 from 35 balls) took on what Westville had to offer, enabling Northwood to creep beyond the 100 mark, finishing on 104-9.

For Westville, Waseem Rahman did the damage with ball in hand, claiming 4/14 in two overs.

It could have gone wrong early for Westville when opener Tyron Koen was dropped before scoring in the first over. As so often happens in cricket, he never looked back, making the opposition pay as he smashed a blistering 48 from 24 balls before chopping a ball onto his stumps.

Raham continued his good work with a run-a-ball 17 and Andrew Moon added 24 from 14 balls. The pair added stability to the innings, getting Westville within sight of the target before both getting out. Luke Bowman (8*) and Kiashen Govender (6*) saw Westville home in only 12 overs, while Northwood’s left-arm spinner Preston Abrahams, who picked up Moon’s wicket, looked promising.

Westville’s win sees them meet either Glenwood, DHS or Kearsney in the semi-final scheduled to be played on January 27, at venues still to be determined. The regional final is on January 30, at Kingsmead and the provincial final — KZN Coastal v KZN Inland — is on February 6.
