Wet weekend sees eight killed on KZN roads

2011-05-09 00:00

EIGHT people were killed in separate accidents across the province during a wet weekend.

At an intersection along the N2 near KwaMsane in Mtubatuba, four people died and three were seriously injured when a bakkie collided with a truck.

Near Stanger three people died and were burnt beyond recognition when two vehicles collided head-on.

Along the old main road in Hammarsdale one person died and another sustained serious injuries after a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and another vehicle.

The northbound traffic on the N3 was obstructed for three hours yesterday near Peacevale after a truck travelling from Durban overturned.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said one person was injured.

The driver apparently put the vehicle in the wrong gear and lost control, Mngomezulu said.

A Netcare 911 paramedic who attended the scene reported that there was another traffic backlog between Camperdown and Cato Ridge.

A truck carrying maize reportedly veered out of control and collided with a Toyota Corolla and a BMW before jackknifing into the centre median.

Four passengers, including a four-month-old baby, were covered in oil but were not badly injured.
